2yo suddenly talking baby-talk/gibberish

Ds1 just turned two. His language is very good: he speaks in sentences and he has a pretty wide vocabulary.

In the last week or two though he has started doing lots of baby talk - saying "doo dar" instead of scooter and "det dar" instead of get down (when he definitely knows the word scooter and get down) and running around the house yelling meeyamorrr and other nonsense words.

I don't think he is regressing as such, as he does still know the real words. It's just like he is choosing to use baby words instead. Sometimes if I call him out on it and give him a 'look' he chuckles so I think he is sorta doing it to wind me up/get a reaction?!

Is this normal? What should i do??

I wouldn't do anything, especially as you know, he knows the word. Language is a playful thing, maybe he's just playing?

My DS aged 2.4 is doing the exactly same, and has been for a couple of months. His language skills are well above average so I'm not worried. He's just doing it to be cheeky! He knows it's "not correct" and when I tell him in a jokey voice that he's just talking nonsense, he gives me a big grin. He also likes talking in a funny voice - very deep / very slow / funny accent etc.

My 2.7 yo does this. It drives me to distraction but I try not to let it show as he smells weakness and does it even more. Currently trying to convince myself it shows good imagination...

So no help from me but plenty of empathy!

Yup DD age 26 months exactly the same. We say "are you talking nonsense" and she'll grin and say "Yes [DD name] talking nonsense" - I think she just enjoys messing around with the sounds. (she also loves nonsense books like Dr Seuss). Her speech is excellent otherwise, I think maybe this is just a stage of experimenting?

Dd did this when her wee brother started babbling and getting praise for it. We just used to say "pardon? I can't understand you when you don't use your words" - soon stopped her because she wasn't getting what she wanted straight away. Did my head in til she nipped it in the bud. We do the same for whiny voices!
