Terrible Teething Pain

My 15 month old has been cutting a premolar for a while now, but it has been quite on and off, seems very slow and not too bad: a bit of drooling, a red cheek, chewing on things and then nothing.

Last night he was up with the pain and he was absolutely hysterical . He was thrashing about and hitting out and holding himself rigid. When I picked him up he relaxed into me, but then kept tensing up again. The pain must have been coming in waves and his face was screwed up.

Where the tooth is coming through had been quite fleshy but he wouldn't let me near him with the liquid Anbesol last night, did manage to get him to take some infant ibuprofen and eventually got some Anbesol somewhere near the spot, but not after being bitten hard.

After a lot of walking around, a sachet of teething powder, a lie on my bed the medicine kicked in and he calmed down but I just wanted to know if there is anything I can do if he is like that again? He wasn't interested in teething tots, fold flannels etc. I have had terrible toothache and can empathise but I was seriously considering calling for help because he just seemed out of it.

Watching with interest as we had a similar situation with 14 month old DS last weekend. It's horrible when nothing you do seems to comfort them isn't it? When I managed to get a look in DS's mouth I found he had 4 premolars and 2 molars all coming through at once!

My DS was awful through the night with his premolars and I ended up going back to giving him a bottle which calmed him down and sent him back to sleep. Now they are through he's fine and sleeps through again so it will end it's very distressing for both them and you though!

A few months back when he was getting his canines I resorted to milk as nothing else worked bless him.

He was screaming tonight when I was getting him dressed after his bath. He was clinging on to me but throwing himself backwards so I could see the two top ones just starting to come through, not sure about the bottom ones. Strange though, he let me brush his teeth no problem.
