Growing out of ASD traits

Has anyone had a 2 yr old with ASD traits who has since grown out of them? My first had a few ie not pointing, obsessively lining up cars but is fine now. My second has similar traits but perhaps more pronounced. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

My ds1 never did the lining up toys thing and his ASD manifests itself in lots of funny little ways. It kind of flips in and out depending how stressed he is or what he's been up to. 2 is very young to be diagnosed with anything but if you feel there is something up, don't be afraid to follow up.

Also, the pointing thing, it's not pointing as in "I want that", it's "look at that" pointing. Which kind of pointing is he doing?

He doesn't do any pointing.......

Oh ok. I can't remember how old they are meant to be when they start pointing. What I would say is that lots of children present with ASD traits which they then grow out of. 2 is very young to get a life-long diagnosis like ASD unless there are specific areas where your child is really struggling. Doctors etc will be looking for general communication and connection abilities. Children with ASD all share a certain disconnection from the world of their fellow humans. To get a diagnosis they have to have problems with social imagination, interaction and communication.

If you feel that your child isn't attempting to communicate in the "normal" ways (eye contact, signing or attempts at speech etc, answering to his name) seek the advice of a health visitor.

It's not all about the toys thing, and it might just be developmental; it might be worth coming onto the SN boards to find good reading material for parents of such little ones.
