Children not learning to speak properly

While the aims of this group, I CAN, a children's communication charity, are laudable, here , I don't think calling for the government to do something will make one jot of difference. Ultimately, it is down to the parents and I wish groups like these would stop calling for government to intervene in order to replace the role of the parent. Educate those parents that want to be helped but there are some out there who see nothing wrong with their parenting style and ultimately, they are free to raise their children as they see fit (and society has to deal with the consequences - that is the nature of a free society).

The Make Chatter Matter campaign also wants communication-friendly early years settings.

What on earth are communication-friendly early years settings?

Am I the only one who thinks that it is totally unrealistic for the government to act as a vicarious parent or am I out of step?

I'm not referring to children with speech problems - that is different. It is the ones who are unfortunate to have parents who are unwilling or incapable of holding a conversation with them. How can government go into their homes in the early years and rectify that? They can't. If they go to nursery then something can be done there to help them but other than that, what realistically can the government do, particularly if the child does not go to nursery, playschool etc?

I agree with you speedymama, it seems fashionable nowadays to blame the government or society instead of taking reponsability.

the government should keep their noses out. they all want the children to be at the same level when they start school (ime) and push them to all become the same. i'm quite sick of it all.
