food obsession

I need some advice, if anyone can help I would be really grateful.
My 15 month old son loves food but when a meal finishes, he has a complete melt down (screams, real tears, grabbing others food etc). In the house, it's tiring but manageable - I just move him from the table, distract him and wait till it blows over. However, out in public, it really embarrasses me - he can obviously see other people's food and he's pointing, screaming, reaching for it while I'm scrabbling round for my purse and to collect our belongings. This starts as soon as he is is at a table or in his high chair and he immediately becomes desperate for food - today he grabbed a slice of lemon and ate it really quickly then was in floods when I moved the rest out of his reach.
He isn't hungry - the portion size seems irrelevant, the reaction remains the same once it's gone. There are a few foods he will reject but most is eaten so I know he has a few dislikes.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? It's something I would like to break before he gets older and harder to manage.
Thank you in advance for any thoughts.
