Cot to bed - what happens at friends / family?

We're working out when to move DD from cot to bed - i imagine this will involve some getting out of bed hence more toddlerproofing / stairgates - but what happens when staying over at friends / family? can't expect stairgates to be installed but how do you stop her getting out of bed at night and falling down stairs etc?! only thing i can think of is to lock door but that seems v mean and risky in case of fire etc!!

When staying away from home with family or friends, we take with us a portable/ travel baby gate (Flexiguard by Lindam) and fit it to bedroom door in which DS is sleeping. It folds down and fits into carry case or you can place it flat in car boot. It can be adjusted to different door openings but does not need a permanent fixing. I always take some socket covers as well in my bag just in case there are plugs in room that are unprotected. Also window blind chords, tie them up out of reach if they are present, I have a thing about them, scare the life out of me when children are around.

My DS is 2.5yrs and I had the same worries and concerns as you. At home, we secured all furniture to walls, socket covers, locked low level opening windows and put keys on hook high up out of reach. Blind chords fixed to wall, cupboard locks on wardrobe doors. We still have gate at top of stairs and keep bathroom door shut, handle is out of reach. Ensure bedroom bin is empty before they go to sleep.

Agree with your OP, avoid locking doors as it could hinder you getting to DC quickly in a fire or if they are sick or unwell.

My parents kept a second hand stairgate at their house as that was where we stayed most often.

Pop-up stairgate or in some houses just closed door as handle was too high.
Rolled up towel under sheet to stop them rolling out (used bed rail at home)

I don't use socket covers anywhere after reading on here they are unnecessary and potentially dangerous
