How to deal with biting in School

I have been called in twice since DS2 started school in September because he has bitten another child, clearly this is not acceptable behaviour but I have no idea how to get him to stop, it's not a problem we have at home, I mean I can remember the odd biting his brother or cousin- just a couple of times, but not for years, probably around 2ish.

Since he has started school his behaviour has got worse at home but not physically, he will cry/whine and grump a lot. We were worried he would find school too much and having tried full time like the school asked dropped to three days this week, I am hoping a few weeks of half weeks will give him back his energy and placid personality.

Would you give your DC a consequence at home to back up the teacher? The first time he bit he lost his programme after school and I made him apologise to the boy the next day. This time I wasn't told till several days afterwards so not sure what to do.
