2.5 yo never stops talking - driving me nuts!

He literally never stops - I can hear him now mumbling away in his sleep which he'll do until he wakes up - then he'll talk all day.

Its driving me nuts - I know it doesn't sound much but its exhausting. We went for a day out today and I mentioned going for dinner, he spent the next 30 mins telling every single person we saw that he was having pasta for dinner. It takes hours to go round a shop because he wants to talk to everyone. I'm sure some people find it cute but others probably think he's a precocious brat . We can't even read bedtime stories any more as he gives a running.commentary of the pictures on every page.

Any ideas how to introduce 'quiet time'?

Posted too soon. He has good understanding of what we tell him but he's a toddler so obviously that doesn't always change what he does. I know it seems like a daft problem but its truly exhausting.

I love how chatty my dd is - yes so I get a running commentary on anything and everything but she is little. Its how they practice. She is 2.9 and the other day found a pair of my earrings and said "look how delicate these earrings are Mammy" - - I didnt even know she knew that word let alone be able to use it in context.

She amazes me! Its tiring if ive had a crap nights sleep to have to keep up the mmmmms and the uh huhs but honestly I wouldnt have it any other way.

Can you get him to watch TV? Or send him to nursery? I adore my DD but would lose the plot without those two .

Wait till he discovers Pokémon at around age 8. Your head will explode!

The only thing that stops ds talking is the Telly. We watch a fair few films in this house

12 months He's always been a talker and I know its a good thing but he speaks to every single person we see - everything takes so long! He's not quiet in the car - he spent 20 minutes this evening berating the moon 'moon come here, stop flying' 'oi, I told you. Silly moon' 'mummy, moons naughty. I want to catbh it

He goes to cm 3 days a week where he happily bosses her, her dh and the other children around. Starts nursery in April. When we went look around he tried to join in in every classroom - sat on chairs with the 6 year olds chatting away to them.

My DD is similar (though perhaps not quite as extreme). At 2 she seemed to have well developed relationships with the parents of children in her room at nursery. It gets better by becoming more interesting, rather than reducing. But I work short days, 5 days a week. A full day is really hard work.

I have this, talks to everyone. He happily ran up to a group of older homeless men sitting drinking special brew in the park at 10am the other day and started telling them about Thomas (the tank engine). I find it is useful for dispersing sulky teenagers hanging out in the play park as it ruins their street cred to have to have a conversation about what he is going to build in the sand pit. But bless teenagers no matter how they look none have been anything but nice to him, although they do scarper quickly.

Mostly I love it though it is wearing a times.

Thanks for your replies. I think you've made a good point humps about Ds not strong if he has an audience. I feel like I need to engage with him all the time but maybe I should just switch off occasionally and let him talk anyway. He does watch telly but just talks at it and tells us what's happening.

Just wait until he adds constant singing to his repertoire... It's have to tune 3yo ds out a lot, for his own safety!

Oh yes, the singing.

Singing may tip me over the edge! Its my birthday today so I'm having a lie in while Dp is downstairs with Ds. He hasn't stopped talking since the minute he woke up - he's currently on the 5th 'reading' of dinosaur roar :)

Dd is 9. She's always been a talker too. Even talks when she swims.
