ds 7.5 wks avoids looking at me

Just wondered if it's something to mention to hv - that my 7 wk old ds rarely looks at me, in fact seems to actively avoid my gaze sometimes when I try to engage with him. All the books talk about them focusing on you intently at this age but he rarely does it. He has been smiling for a couple of weeks now but usually it's not exactly at us. On the occasions it is it is so lovely it makes me desperate for him to do it more often! He does a lot of staring to one side or the other instead, and at things on his play gym.

I remember my ds doing this at around the same age.I mentioned it to the gp as I was going for his check .She looked in his eyes and said everything was fine.I also seem to remember reading that when babies are tired they don't make eye contact as often. So don't panic I'm sure it's not serious.

My ds was the same. He didn't smile at us until 10 - 12 weeks and even then it was rare. Also babies turn their heads away when they are tired, so don't worry, it's normal for him to avoid your gaze sometimes, try again when he's more alert. If he's focussing on things on his gym you've got nothing to worry about.

ah... well he is a terrible sleeper, so maybe that's part of it!

Dd did this and at one point I actually thought she may have been blind but no was just her being a tinker. Try not to worry but maybe you should mention it to hv for reassurance..guaranteed once you do he wont stop staring at you..

My ds2 would never make eye contact and as he got older made it quite clear he didn?t like cuddles either, really hurtful when you are a very tactile person. I was sure he was autistic. He's now nearly 3 years old and at last enjoys his cuddles!!

I was worried about my friends baby not making eye contact.

He is now coming up6 months and is fine. Lovely and smiley, really alert, wouldnt worry just yet.

My ds does exactly the same thing! He is five weeks old and seems happy to focus on our stack of shiny saucepans in preference to me! Mind you, when he does beam at me it melts my heart. Bless
