Dd age 6 behind in reading

We moved a 6 months ago and dd went from a school giving her 2 books to take home to read to us twice a week as well as a pot of words to learn which were continually being updated, to a school that gives her one book to take home every 3 weeks, u get no feedback on her reading from them except today there was a note in her book bag saying she was assessed at level red, which is the same level she's been at since early reception in her previous school. She is now in year 1 and 6 on sunday.. If anything I would say her reading has got worse. It's been a bit of a jolt and have just signed up to rental service who will send us 12 reading books for her to read to us a month.

Was I being unreasonable expecting that her school had a handle on it and that she got to read to her teaching assistant at school? I can't figure out whether this is a failing by the school or whether I missed the idea that I'm supposed to be purchasing her books to read and doing it with her myself rather than letting the school teach her...was I thoroughly spoiled by her previous school?

With her previous school she did read to me every evening and we went through her 'word pot'. With no tools for this given by her new school I haven't continued as we did. I feel angry toward the school but maybe it's myself I should be upset at!

If you haven't already, it's worth joining the library. I tend to go to the library once every 2-3 weeks, choose 20 books that are suitable for the kids to read and let them choose what they want to read. I think some times the school books are quite full and boring and not inspiring. We always have 30 mins before bed where each dc reads to me and I read either a chapter of their chosen book or a whole book if short. It's real special time and not seen as a chore. Kids learn to read at different speeds though. I am lucky I have 2 avid readers but can't get them to write for love nor money! Please don't beat yourself up. Moving house can be unsettling so I would say if she is happy at school and wanting to do some reading, keep encouraging and keep being supportive and ask the school if they can help a bit more in school too.
