Hi

My 4 yr DD has given my 2 yr DD about 35ml of Calpol!! Not sure if this is a big problem??? She seems fine!! Thoughts???

Unlikely to be a problem, but it depends on her weight and if she has any medical issues.

Phone 111 as suggested and they'll calculate the dose for you, and tell you whether you need to see a dr.

You need to take her to A+E. Now.

What strength of Calpol was it? 125mg/5ml?
So approx 4g of Paracetamol - that is a big dose for a 2 yo.

Seriously, A+E now.

Risk of severe liver damage (ie a peak ALT more than 1000 IU/L)

Based on the dose of paracetamol ingested (mg/kg body weight):
Less than 150 mg/kg - unlikely.
More than 250 mg/kg - likely.
More than 12 g total - potentially fatal.

I don't want to scare you, chances are she will be fine, but she really should be checked out.

Get some urgent medical advice that is a big dose 7.5ml is max dose at one time

Mine says max dose of 7.5ml it has 120mg parcetamol

A&E, internal damage can take a while to show but is damaging.

A&E and then when you get home put the medicine somewhere your 4 year old can't get at it!

also how do you know the exact amount given - it could be a lot more. Get her checked out.
I would also like to know how a 4yo managed to open a bottle of Calpol _ I can never get into ours because of the childproof tops. Did she manage one of those syringe things as well?

Pacific dogwood, by your calculations;

35ml calpol ( 125 mg/ 5 ml = 25 mg/ml) = total paracetamol dose of 875 mg

If max dose = 150 mg/ml, child would only need to be over 6 kg to be within safety limits.

But, like I said, it does depend on her medical history too, so phone for advice. No point in rushing to a&e.

Please please ring your GP and/or take your child to A&E immediately. They will decide whether treatment is required, and the sooner this is initiated the better. Paracetamol overdose damages the liver and the effects are not seen for a few days. It is critical that you get some medical advice ASAP.

I didn't realise the 4 yr old could get to it!! Now moved!

The Calpol is 120mg per 5ml

I have just consulted a colleague who deals with poisoning cases. This is a potentially toxic dose for a two year old, and she said you should ring 111 straight away and they will advise further.

Just saw your post. Hope all goes well. Has she had any other paracetamol in the last 24 hours, and are you sure about the 35ml volume?

Quick update, doctors said go to A&E, so went this morning. All ok, they said it's very common! And were not particularly concerned!!

4 yr old DD found a box of Calpol sachets that I'd forgotten we had. Hence I know how much she was given. Feel a bit embarrassed about the whole thing! Def learnt my lesson though!!
