toddler fear of bed

Dd, 20 months but very young for it, has developed a fear of going to bed! She can be wild behaviour wise, but tonight it was the face she pulls when terrified. I've only seen it a few times, such as slipping in the bath. Last night she woke up, she normally can't stand on the soft mattress but she was clinging to the side howling each time replaced. Ended up with me, tonight in the light I saw the fear on her face. It's not normal refusal or crying, but a wild response, totally lost it.

I don't know where to start on this! It's hugely out of character. She's a bit delayed and a simple creature of routine normally.

Any pearls of wisdom?

My DS is 20 months and went through this last month. He is also very young for 20 months. Suddenly it seemed like he was terrified of his bedroom. it took about 4 days to get back to normal but I played with him in the day in there, moved his furniture around so it was sort of new and got him a brighter night light. I had to cuddle him to sleep for a few nights but he's fine now!
