Baby Grunts!

My 3 week old boy just started grunting a lot. he does it when eating, when falling asleep, and when pooping. I wind him until I'm worried I'm hurting him, and he doesn't seem to be in pain when he is grunting, so I'm thinking it's just a baby 'thing' but does anyone else have experience of this? He's generally a chilled baby so not loads of crying, and I'm sure if something were wrong with him he'd cry rather than grunt? It's amusing in a way but getting a little bit annoying :) his poos are fine so he's not constipated. Doesn't vomit more than once every day. Sleeps 2-3 hours at a time.

Probably just a growing stage but as it is to do with breathing just take him along to the GP to check then you can relax. Anything to do with breathing in a newborn should be checked out for obvious reasons.

If these grunts are accompanied by wheezing or bubbling sounds during normal breathing, I'd get him looked at.

Otherwise, if he's not got colic and he isn't going red-faced filling his nappy, I would say these grunts are part of his repertoire of noises stepping up from just crying. He might develop squeaks, squawks and gurgles.

If you think his grunting Is to do with his berating then please get him checked padticularky if it's on the outward breath.

My ds does this it was the first noise he learnt to make - he's 11 weeks now and does it less now he's making other noises. Though it's normally when he's in light sleep at night now which is annoying!

Thanks for your help. He breathes fine when he's not grunting, the grunting tends to be in bursts lasting up to an hour rather than constant (though it feels constant!). It ramps up when he's doing a poo or in the run up, when he's just eaten or when he's gone down in his Moses basket on his back. I'm registering him at the doctors next Monday so will get an appointment to check it out . He's such a content baby that I don't feel terribly worried, though if it is digestive discomfort I hope it doesn't escalate to colic type crying fits, I've been giving him some infacol anyway in case it is trapped wind.

My DS used to sound like a little piggy too! He grew out of it.

They are quite piggy! Quite guttural sounding too. He's lying here in my arms absolutely fighting sleep and grunting away.
