15 MO slapping himself on head and face - what's that all about?

My 15 month old DS has recently started to slap himself on the head and face, usually when he is a bit excited or if I'm trying to take him away from something he wants.

Is this normal? He is also smacking me about the head too although I just say no firmly and put him down. It's the self smacking that is more worrying!

DD used to do that when she was about that age. Then she would go 'ow' and laugh. Then do it again

I haven't seen her do it for ages so maybe it's just a phase. Kids are weird

She still smacks me though. Nursery tell me it's quite normal for toddlers and mum usually gets the worst of it. Oh joy.
