When should/did your baby sit up?

My baby can roll from back to tummy (but not back again) and hold is head up well but cannot yet sit up, what ages does this happen and is there anything I can do to help or encouraged him. He spends his life on his back or tummy and doesn't show any sign of ever wanting to sit up. He's 12 weeks...

I would say most start sitting up at about 6/7/8 months.

One of mine could crawl before he sat up. They do honestly develop at different rates. But at 12 weeks you definitely don't need to worry about sitting up yet! Smile

And I don't think there is much you can do to encourage them to sit up. They will do it when they are ready.

Um... Babies sit up at around 6 months.
Do you have a baby book with development stages in so that you know what to expect?
I can recommend the dr Sears Baby book as it has just about everything covered in there.

Around 6 to 8 months is average but as with all baby developmental milestones there are also a lot of babies who do things outside of the average without any concern at all.
12 weeks is really early to be thinking about sitting unaided. Keep doing lots of rolling on the floor, tummy time etc and this will give the muscles needed for sitting chance to develop.
Hope that helps.

6 months plus, laying down is best for babies, just follow their lead where you can and everything will be okay.

3 months is very little!

DS was 9 months. He could crawl, and walk holding onto stuff before he could sit!

My 12 weeker has only just started to support her head, albeit in a slightly wobbly fashion. She can roll onto her side, and kind of falls back, and she does not roll onto her tummy either. It will all happen eventually.

DD1, the day before she was 6 months (textbook baby Wink)
DD2 didn't sit up reliably until she was about 10 months. She was crawling at 5 months, walking at 8 months, so if you tried to sit her up she just flipped onto her front and crawled/walked off.
Ds 7 months.
