Trailing after older children

My 10 month old son is really sociable, especially with other children, typically walking after them, wanting to touch them, do whatever they're doing etc. He's generally pretty gentle, but it's rare that he gets a positive response.

I'm not fretting - he's too tiny for any of this to mean much - but it can be kind of tragic to watch. The little kids don't interest him and the big ones aren't generally interested in him (and he's not actually able to do what he wants to with them - climb after them, kick a ball etc).

At what stage do they normally start both being interested in little ones their own age and get down to just playing alongside each other?
