Confidence issues in children

Hi I'm just wondering if anyone can give me any advice. My 6 year old has recently become very shy to the point where he will not talk or make eye contact with people other than his immediate family. I have recently started a new relationship and he has explained to me that he finds it very ignorant and that sometimes he ignores him too. I immediately leapt to the defence of my child , this comment has made me really upset because I know my child is not ignorant and it is breaking my heart witnessing him struggle to converse with people. It has also affected his studies as he even finds it difficult to ask the teacher for help. For example today he struggled to take his jumper off in school but would not ask for any assistance. So he left it on and was too hot. I am hoping that this is just a phase he is going through because I have tried as many after school activities I could think of that might help. If anyone could give me any advice that would be brilliant thanks x

It sounds like your son has Selective Mutism which CAN be treated. Can I ask, does your new partner life with you and your son? I hope he never said these negative things in front of your son? You need to see the doctor without DS and tell then Doctor about this....speech therapy can help him....it's a very real condition which CAN be fixed.

No he doesn't live with us and no he didn't say that in front of my son I wouldn't have allowed it!! I have just read a little about this condition and it does seem to match up. I suffer with anxiety myself but I thought I had hidden it well from my son. I never considered it could be a condition he may have. Thanks for your reply. I'm hoping things will get better soon Smile x

Could he be anxious about the new relationship, OP? He may have picked up on negative vibes, even if nothing has been said.

I note that you say his shyness is a recent development. What has changed in his life that may have brought this on?
