11 month old not talking?

I have an 11 month old baby who literally doesn't say anything.

He will squeal and laugh, cry etc but doesn't babble at all. Sometimes he squeaks and sort of 'sings' but nothing that I would call 'talking'.

I also have a 2 year old who was saying mumma and dada etc at 6 months so I'm pretty confused as to whether I should be worried or if my youngest DS if just developing his language a little slower. He has been tested for deafness and it's not that so not sure what it might be?

Any help would be appreciated.

My husband didn't talk til he was 3.5 years - he's a doctor now. I wouldn't worry.

My DC didn't talk at that age. Don't worry they all develop at there own rate. I know of one child who didn't talk until at least 3, then started talking in sentences.

Not babbling by 9 months is a developmental concern. It's true that they all do things at a different rate, but I would at least check with your HV.

No advice I'm afraid but following as my nearly 8 month old daughter is very quiet and beginning to get seriously worried, we are booked for a hearing test on 18th sept

I think that your son is fine. Your daughter was a very early talker. I believe that 12 months is about average for a baby to say their first word. I would be concerned if there is no speech by 18 months.

Mine is 20 months and only just started saying a few words. They all develop differently

Does he understand language and respond to his name? Lack of actual words s certainly not a concern and lack of babbling might not be a problem either particularly if there's nothing else you're worried about.

Neither of mine babbled at 11 months. Started saying the odd word around 12-13 months. No one - including HV and GP - thought this was a concern.

They now both talk constantly.

I am quite sure that Long took no pleasure in saying something that could worry the OP but she was correct. No babbling at all is a concern.

Babies start making vocal noises almost from birth and her baby should have been experimenting with sound for several months by now. If he genuinely isn't making any attempt to make sounds apart from screaming he needs to be seen by a paediatrician. That's not to say that there is definitely something wrong with him but it is a concern and his development should be assessed.

If there is an issue, early intervention could make a bug difference.

OP, you need to ask your GP for a paediatrician or speech and language therapist referral.

My ds was a late babbler, he certainly wasn't babbling at 9 months and I was very concerned.

Strangely he spoke early, it was like he missed the babbling stage and just decided to wait until he could say what he wanted to say.
