Babies sleeping through the night - when did yours start?

My baby is only 5 weeks old and some mothers have said "mine were all sleeping through the night by this time" Is this possible? Baby is in a loose routine and is very good at night wakes every 3/ hours but its a quick turn around - when can I expect her to sleep through?

No they weren't the mad women are talking bullpats.

My ds still wakes up at 10, 1, and 4 and he is 5 months old.

I read some great advice, can't remember where:
Expect your child to sleep through any time between 6 weeks and 6 years. That just pretty much sums it up, it's very hard to predict as every baby is different. Your baby sounds like she's doing well enough to be going throuh 3 hours and be in a loose routine. I would be very about mums who say their baby sleeps through by 5 weeks, maybe I'm just jealous.

#1 was also in a loose routine and slept 11-5 at 7 weeks which I called sleeping through the night. #2 is 20 months and wakes 1-3 times a night. needless to say if she'd been #1...

sweetkitty · 21/09/2006 14:55

Also remember sleeping through means different things to different people, 7-7, 8-8, 11-7, 12-8 and so on.

DD1 slept 11-7 from 6 weeks old, 8-8 at 12 weeks

DD2 just doesn't sleep very much ever, goes to bed at 10ish, up at 2 and 5am on a good night.

Elibean · 21/09/2006 14:57

Maybe their nights were very, very short

dd slept from 11 till 6ish for the first time at around nine weeks, then didn't, then did, and progress has always been like that. Never a straight line. I'd say regular sleeping through (apart from teething, milestones, illness...) started at around four months, but I was still dream-feeding her at 10-11pm!

Nemo1977 · 21/09/2006 15:03

Ds was a nightmare and only truly slept through at 18mths..even then he woke up at 5am and still sometimes wakes in the night now and is nearly 3.
DD Slept from 11-6 from around 5mths and is now 9mths and can go from 6.30pm to 9am plus. However up to being 5mths she was still having horrendous reflux episodes so could wake in excess of 6/7times a night.

I would ignore peopel who go on about their baby sleeping through as it just makes you feel horrible. some children sleep lots some dont.

bobblehead · 21/09/2006 17:25

DD is 15 months and has only slept through (8-6ish) a handful of times.

belgo · 21/09/2006 17:27

I love mumsnet - however badly I think my kids sleep, there's always kids who sleep worse!

trinityshiftingherleatheryarse · 21/09/2006 17:29

18 months and counting.............

munz · 21/09/2006 17:35

jesus 5 weeks I was up at least 3/4 times a night.

sleepin thru not counting my chickens but two v good nights of 7-7 ish so v please, and he's 7 months.

USAUKMum · 21/09/2006 17:39

Mine were both between 10 & 11 mths before they "slept through" ie went to sleep at bedtime (sometime between 7:15 & 7:30) and slept until at least 5:30am -- the curse of children who don't need much sleep ! Touch wood, now they wake between 6 & 7am at 5.5 & 2. Though had a spat from Easter until mid Aug where DS woke at least 1x a night, until was diagnosed with asthma. Now on meds he is sleeping again ! Yeah!

hulababy · 21/09/2006 17:40

DD slept through (11 while about 6ish) from 6 weeks. However it didn't last long - stopped at 12/13 weeks, when we went on holiday. She didn't sleep through again until 20 months, when we resorted to 2 or 3 nights of CC.

LIZS · 21/09/2006 17:47

Think there is a very loose and variable definition of "sleeping through". For some just 3 hours sleep together between 2 and 5 would be enough for other it is 8 or more ! ds was around 10 weeks and dd 8/9 when they did about 7 hours or more.

Coolmama · 21/09/2006 18:26

DS was a sweet child and slept through from about 15 or 16 weeks (can't remember exactly) and has done since then.

Scoobydooooo · 21/09/2006 18:29

Ds slept through from 10-7am when he was 6 weeks

Dd - slept through from 9-6/6.30am at 8 weeks

Dd is now 8 months & since about 5 months has slept from 6.30/7pm-7/8am both mine have been great sleepers thank god.

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/09/2006 18:39

Is your DD breast or formula fed, as this often seems to make a difference. My DD is breastfed, and still doesn't sleep through at 7.5 months. She has done it 6 times in her life though!

Peridot30 · 21/09/2006 19:08

Your baby is still really young dont worry about it all kids sleep through at different times. Mine were great sleepers but some friends kids are still not sleeping through at 7months and 12months. Think it definately depends on breast fed or bottle fed.

poppiesinaline · 21/09/2006 19:13

I dont think it makes a difference if they are breast or bottle fed. They are either good sleepers or not imo.

DS1 was 8 months
DD was nearly 3 years
DS2 is 17 months - he sometimes sleeps through and sometimes doesnt.

MamaAfrika · 21/09/2006 19:16

I also used to think mums whose babies slept through around 6 weeks were liberal with the truth. DD1 (22 months) woke up 2-3 times a night for a very very long time. DD2 (14 weeks) has been sleeping through (11-7) around 6 weeks, then 8-6 around 10 weeks. I even dropped the 11pm dreamfeed successfully. And yes, I breastfeed her, and she is thriving. Now, if I can only keep DD1 from getting into my bed around 4am...

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 21/09/2006 19:17

Jess - never slept through until 15 months

Becky - slept through at 6 weeks, but for the last 2 months (she is now 11 months) she has been waking at 3am for a drink and bonjela.
