Help! My 5 month old insists on being carried all day! He's a whinger!

I'm really upset and don't know what the right thing to do: my son is 5 months is a massive WHINGER! He turns it on whenever he's not in my arms. He won't lay down and enjoy his toys and play unless he's being held. He controlls me with his voice. Should I invest time to break this habit of wanting to be held to avoid him being an unhappy child (which will mean him SCREAMING) or shall I just do what he wants and hold him all day long???????

What do you think?

yep, people like to think of us as some shellsuit-strewn razor city (and there are some areas...) but there was a survey recently and edinburgh and glasgow were both higher up than london as i recall. But you're in Devon, so you must be chewing on an ear of corn and clotting some cream as we speak.

and to get back to the OP... yes, a swing. i had a fisher price one, very low to the ground and with music and flashing lights. i tried her in a graco one as well but she didn't like it as much as the fisher price. plus the fisher price is more of a 'lying down' angle which i prefer for little spines.

ME AGAIN!! So today I borrowed a friends Ergo sling, and alas he liked it for about 15 minutes then wanted to practice standing up. I LOVE the idea of the cranio (head thing) so have booked him in next week. Maybe he does feel a bit of pain when laying on his belly and back! I odn't mind how much it costs - i just need some peace and quiet! God, I'm going to be such a bad mother if this is the problem as today, I've been using some 'tough love' methods as i had to bake a cake!!!

15 minutes sounds good for starters - they don't have much of an attention span! I would expect them to like much for more than 15-20 minutes really without wanting a change of scenery /activity

yeah, maryhill's particularly lovely, eh?

aitch71 · 21/09/2006 22:13

filly, you'd not believe it but maryhill's getting poshed up a bit (emphasis on 'a bit'). it's called North Kelvinside now...

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 22/09/2006 08:10

see I love maryhill.

I liked the views a lot.

I used to stand on the balcony of my friend's top floor flat in maryhill and watch the sunset. And feed the pigeons. Fantastic.

I also went out with someone who lived in - can't remember-you bascially walked down sauchiehall street (past the 13th note...) for ages and then carried on walking and I can't freaking remember what it was called...it will come to me...

ah, happy days.

how to calm your baby

star1976 · 03/11/2006 09:24

My little boy was exactly the same and I had constant back ache as he is a big boy! But i am pleased to say that he is now 8 months and ever since he started rolling around and now pulls himself along (won't actually crawl though) he is a much more contented baby, and will actually entertain himself quite well for short periods so that I can get the hoovering done and things!

nappyaddict · 06/11/2006 01:18

i was just wondering as a friend of mine was interested in a wrap sling, can the baby sit in it cross legged as she was told this was best for the baby's spine until they can sit up.

nappyaddict · 06/11/2006 01:55

apparently she read it in this article baby slings

does anyone actually know what it means by cross legged cos i don't think i've ever seen one that allows that!

mamama · 06/11/2006 02:12

My DS needed to be carried everywhere when he was younger and, even now, I tend to carry him in the sling or backpack instead of using the buggy.

We have a sling from kangarookorner , which I love - I used it with ds when he was 4 months old and you can use them til they're about 3. This is the cross-legged position.

threebob · 06/11/2006 04:12

Ds is gradually weaning himself off his hip seat - having been a sling baby. He is happy and non whingey.

So don't worry about his development - concentrate on now.
