2 year check - threading activity. Can it be onto a straw, or does it have to be a shoelace?

Have received two questionnaires to complete. I can answer most of it, but we've never done any threading activities. I've got blocks with holes in that we could thread onto something - are straws ok, or does the thing he threads onto need to be soft?

I really don't think it matters. Don't try to make sure he ticks all the boxes. It's a rare child who manages ALL the list.

This was the one my DD couldn't do. We tried a shoelace and pasta shapes. But then she had never attempted it before. It's mildly interesting to see what they can do but honestly it doesn't matter.
I took ages testing her on the various bits and HV barely looked at it. Said she was fine.

The testing is interesting - some of it we do anyway (spot the dog in the picture, what is that animal called etc), but some never occurred to me that he should be doing! He won't imitate me so those boxes aren't ticked, and he doesn't jump with two feet together (will jump off something low but drops one leg first then lands one foot after the other). I'm sure so long as he can do 'enough' in each section, they don't care what it is, but we're having fun lol. Spot the SAHM with PFB!

You really really really really don't have to "revise" or "practice" for the "test"!!!

Don't even see it as "testing" or something they have to pass. Really. Let them develop in their own time :)

It's only really to pick up developmental problems, and if they had those it wouldn't make a lot of difference you practicing as such.

Really really don't get into this. They will have "assesments" at pre-school but its not worth cramming for that either... let them develop, honestly.

If you don't know, you don't know - you don't have to make him do the activity.

My DD never even got one. My DS was sent a questionnaire and appointment with 3 days notice. I work and asked to rearrange. They never contacted me again !! When j chased it they said they don't bother unless you have worries now

Oh no, DD has her check on Monday and nothing has been mentioned about her being tested on things.

It's at home which is stressing me out enough (I need to scrub the house as obviously they will be judging my parenting based on it) but I had no idea they will be testing her on things. We've never done any threading.

Running off to panic now

It's not really testing. DS1's check didn't involve activities at all, we just talked about his development.

In many areas they are only available on request now due to cuts!

It's a chance to talk about sleep/potty training/anything else you might want to talk to a HV about but haven't had a chance to do so.

dd hardly spoke at all.
and she spent most of the meeting being clingy and reluctant to do anything. even to play with their toys or be weighed or measured!
the nurse seemed very happy wuth her, using our stories as evidence.
she brightened up when we left and played with the toys in the play room.

we had s followup meeting at home to make sure we were getting all the help we needed with her eczema, where she was seen in he own environment, so she was nirmal tgen.

but no test of anything.
she pobably would have failed because she went shy!

DD had hers a couple of weeks ago, she got given a thick lace and beads with massive holes by the HV.

Funny with threading as i wouldnt give my 2yo beads... Not sure where rhey would go so she has had no practice.
We are struggling with stuff-food up the nose.

Nat you can buy massive beads....or use cotton reels....in fact you can buy packs of cotton reels expressly for threading.

I would shred the questionnaires and not waste my time engaging with the HV. Trust me, both you and your child will be a lot happier! IME, they are not fit for purpose and a drain on NHS resources.

yeah complete waste of time, picking up potential language/ behavioural issues early on so interventions are put into place well before school . Of course you probably know/ would pick it up, many don't/ wouldn't. It's interesting because round here the questionnaires were introduced 5 years ago. I really don't understand the hate of health visitors.

OP I doubt it matters, just use what you have. dd2 couldn't jump with 2 feet either.
