Hi everyone, just wondering what routines people have with 1 year olds? My DD gets up early 5.30am this morning and naps but never at the same time and doesn't go to bed until 9pm. I'm shattered and would like to get her to bed earlier, so what do you guys do that works?

Ds is 11 months

Wakes at 6.30/6.45am
Sleep at ~ 10am for anything between 0.5 - 2 hours.
2nd nap anytime between 3pm & 4.30pm time and length depends on how long morning nap was.
Bath @6.30 (latest) and in bed for ~7.00pm

Thanks hermykne and DontlookatmeImshy. What do you feed your babies before bed? I'm still breastfeeding and think it might not be enough to keep her going until morning. What do you think?

Sorry I'm not much help there, I'm still giving him another feed at 11pm. He is breastfed too. He has only just started sleeping through from 11pm - 6.30am on a semi-regular basis, so there's no way he's ready to give up the 11.00pm feed as well.

Exactly the same as Chocolateshoes.

Suggest you could bring bedtime forward slowly over a couple of weeks, by 10 mins every other day or something. Then DD might not notice so much. DS1 slept from 7-7 at 1 yr - it could be that your DD might not be getting enough sleep, and going to bed earlier hopefully shouldn't mean an earlier waking - you might even find eventually it means later waking - hope so for you!!

My ds is now 17 months old but he has the same routine now as he did when he was 12 months old.
Awake at 7am, breakfast at 7.30am, lunch at 11.30am, nap from 12.30pm-2pm, snack at 2pm, tea at 4.15pm, bath at 6.30pm, bottle and bed at 7pm. I think the key to a good routine is being consistent and doing the same things every day at the same times (roughly).

I agree with "Clairemow" that maybe your dd is just not getting enough sleep. Think thats a good idea to bring her bedtime forward gradually. Then perhaps you can have some time for yourself as well! Good luck !

Bozza · 16/09/2006 20:51

When my children were one they both had the following routine:

Up 6.30-7 and milk.
Breakfast 8
Lunch 11.30-12
Nap 12/12.30/2/2.30
Snack/nursery tea 4
Dinner 6
Bath 7
Bed 7.30

Brilliant everyone thanks for the advice. I am going to start and try for 8.30pm in bed this week, just bringing it forward slowly so not to shock her. I also read that babies shouldn't nap after 3pm, which my DD invariably does so I will try and stop that too. Thanks again you MNs are brilliant.

Agree about napping after 3 - it can put them off bed time. Mind you, DS1 is now 2.4, and still naps after lunch, from about 1.30 - 3, and still goes down at 7 every night. So if you're aiming for 8.30, don't get too hung up on waking DD at 3 on the dot!
