does you 5 year old understand simple jokes?

Dd doesn't get jokes, nor does she get how to tell them.
I will tell her a simple knock knock joke and she just takes them very literally and doesn't find it funny.
Tried to teach her jokes as we just get endless attempts of her trying to tell jokes but she doesn't seem to grasp the concept bless her.
Anyone else?

My 4.5yo isn't too good at jokes but laughs anyway as she thinks that is the expected reaction.
She has started making little quips though which are quite funny. Yest I was complaining that the washing machine didn't seem to be working too well as the clothes wear still a bit stained, and she said 'you'll have to put the washing machine in the washing machine hahahahaha' which I thought was quite clever.

My ds 5.5 does not get jokes. I have read alot of jokes out from "just joking" on here but he didnt laugh at any and we had to explain why they were funny!

He retold one with prompting from us to inlaws but he forgot the punch line!

the funniest thing that makes them laugh is winkie head, or poo poo

Took till 6+ for jokes to go from frankly bizarre (but funny) to conventional. Aided by Xmas stocking joke book.

DS 5 told his first joke yesterday. And he is exceptionally witty so all normal with your DD

To be fair to her, most knock knock jokes AREN'T funny.

My 6yo nephew only recently developed a sense of humour.He just did not get jokes until very very recently. I wouldn't worry about it:-)

An example of my DD (5)'s 'jokes'
'Why did the cat cross the road?'
'Because he wanted to poo on his head!'

Cue endless laughter from her and DS1.

DD(5) laughs at all jokes because she knows that's what you do after a joke is told. She understands some after I've explained them (not all) and will happily retell a joke that she doesn't understand at all! She also tries to make up her own, but doesn't really get the whole punch line thing.
