Sore thumbs from little new teeth

My DD is 8months and sucks her thumb when she is tired (not all day long) I think it may partially be to gain some comfort while she is teething. However her thumb has become inflamed and red, with the surface of the skin broken. Yesterday it looked as though a little bit of pus was there. I phoned the chemist and she said to give her a dummy as thumb sucking had ruined her daughter's teeth. The health visitor of course advised against dummies. I don't want DD to have a problem with her teeth but I also don't want her thumb to be sore. What do others think and what should I do with her thumb?
