When can they have pillow?

My dd has just turned one!!! Still cant beleive it! Anyway she loves sleeping on pillows but I am not sure whether or not to buy her a small one for her cot as she sleeps on her side. Is it still dangerous at her age and where can you buy child pillows (if they exist)?

mine has had a pillow to raise his head and ease snuffly noses since 5 months, his sheepskin is over the top of it. However, he is very strong and sleeps in his cot at the foot of my bed, wouldn't let him have one if he was in another room.
So IMHO your daughter should cope fine

Think its from aged one. Also think you can get them in Mothercare. With DS we just used an old one that had gone quite flat but he was a bit older when we introduced it.

From one year accoring to the 'expert' advice.

We got a pillow for DD when she was 18 months and moved into a toddler bed. We got a cot sized pillow from Mothercare - it is much smaller and thinner than a standard pillow, but also dearer - as were the pillow cases!

DD likes having a pillow that's why we got her one. If your DD isn't bothered then you don't need to rush ino it anyway.

My ds had a pillow when he moved to a bed (at around 20 months I think), but I know friends who've used them younger.

You can get children's pillows in Mothercare & Ikea (Ikea ones are cheap but don't wash very well - they tend to go quite lumpy!)

suzywong - you have given me an idea. i have a flat old pillow that i could put under her bedsheet therefore it would not move around. then she would have a comfy lump to lie on... have to try it.

A folded cellular cot blanket in a pillow case will do the trick as well.

My dd's 18 months and I've never given her a pillow, she doesn't have blankets either as she wears a sleeping bag. But I've been wondering about this. Do you think blankets and a pillow would stop her roaming around the cot so much at night? Or would she find it restricting and not like it? Sorry to ask a different question to the original one.

my ds has had a pillow since five months first of all on the mat then in his cot hen he had a runny nose tried to take it away from him and god help us he woke up five time a night and screamed the place down gave it back and slept through the night once again never would i take his pillow again plus hes in our room and we have one of those sensor monitors to be safe side

I just got one for dd she's 17 mths and she loves it. She would come on our bed and lay on ours so I thought whyever not...
Glad I did!
Over one is the advice, mothercare do nice little sized ones with all the anti allergy bumpf

Evita, my ds1 also roams around the cot. He's 28 months now and I only gave him a pillow a few months ago (can't remember exactly). It took him ages to get the hang of it and probably about half the time he jsut moves down the cot out of its way! I also tried a duvet a couple of months ago but reverted to the grobag because his sleep was disturbed - I'm not sure if the duvet was making it worse and may try it out again soon. he did seem to be able to sleep under it...most of the time

That's interesting elliott. By 28 months I'd imagined a little one would sleep tucked up in bed like a little child! Do you think some kids are more mobile at night than others then? What about moving to a bed? Can you attempt that when they roam around so much?

DS2 (3) is in a bed and is never tucked in nicely up the head end with his pillow. He usually ends up down the foot of the bed on top of the duvet. So no, a pillow doesn't stop them roaming! DS1, however, was/is a neat sleeper and has always stayed up the head end.

I don't know how the bed move will be....we've tried him a few nights and he has slept ok (with a bed guard) but was out of bed roaming around the moment he stirs in the morning (shortly after 6)! As you can imagine I'm delaying the moment as long as possible

Ds got a pillow a few weeks after his first birthday because we kept finding him sleeping all tucked up with his head on his cuddly toys. Got a Mothercare cot one and 2 pillow cases - pricey but a nice size and clearly he loves it. The first night he lay on it, he snuggled his head from side to side as if burrowing into it and said "awwwwwww".

I took DS out of his sleeping bag and put him in under a duvet when he moved into a bed at 27 months but to no avail. This was May and was OK in the summer because he is quite a warm bud. But come autumn we reverted because he was waking us up several times a night because he was cold. So all last winter he slept in a summer weight sleeping bag with the duvet over. His wriggling was inside the sleeping bag and the duvet seemed to stay put. When he moved bedrooms at age 3 (Feb) I removed the sleeping bag and he seems OK.

Years ago I read to give a child a pillow when they were old enough to ask for one. My dd asked at around 2 so had one then. I also tuck a sheet in under the duvet which seems to have stopped her wandering and falling out when tiny.
