my dd (3) is writing and very nearly reading and i am terribly dyslexic and want to help her learn to read and so on (not, i hasten to add because i am hothousing her, but becasue she is asking to) but i dont know where to start - word recognition, or spell it out? and i guess i was thinking some book suggestions would be a good start. any sugegstions?

Jolly Phonics is a popular way to start - you can get the materials - workbooks, dvd's, games, first readers etc - including a parents' guide from Jolly Learning , elc or Amazon. The phonic approach, using letter sounds , both individual and in combination, to build up words is what is considered most effective now.
