First of all, my total sympathy for all you (no doubt shattered) mums and dads out there who are trying to cope through this. Colic is truly horrendous!! My daughter is 3 now but I am still haunted by the memories of those relentless first few colic riddled months of my daughters life. I, like so many of you, tried every conceivable remedy for colic that can be bought over the counter, all to no avail. Only one thing helped me in the end. This was Dr Karp's 5 S's. This Dr had spent years traveling the world studying how people - globally- best sooth their babies, and then he devised a systematic way of comforting babies specifically with colic. The 5 S's he recommended, which really work at their best when all combined at the same time are;
Swinging/Swaying - sway your baby from side to side (quite vigorously but ensure their head and neck are well supported)
Side- Whilst swaying your baby have them on their side, with their back to your tummy, with one hand under their head, neck, and body area whilst the other hand supports their tummy - with the baby leaning at an angle that means they are slightly tilted towards facing the floor.
Sucking - offer baby a dummy (preferably) - or if not, a clean finger to suck.
Shushing - say "Shhhhhh" more loudly than the usual polite kind of soothing noise we do and in a continuous manner until you run out of puff right up to babies ear.
Swaddling - best done using material that wont create too much heat and is safe, perhaps like a cellular blanket. However, there are swaddling blankets that are designed for the purpose out there on the net (but do your homework on the safety info related to these items and take some instruction on how best to acheive safe and comfy for baby swaddling because it is a technique that takes a little practice.)
Hope this helps all you bleary eyed sleepless souls, it helped me enormously. Dr Karps stuff is out there on the net so just throw it into google and you can get the full lowdown.
