Does anyone have a DC with missing fingers?

DS2, born 3 days ago, was born without 3 of his fingers on his right hand. He has been x-rayed etc, and it's not thought that it's part of any kind of "syndrome" just that it was one of those things when he was developing in the womb. He will rpobably have to have a surgery in the future, as his thumb joint is quite loose and may inhibit him gripping anything in his hand when he is older. That said, this may correct itself in time, as the ligaments in his hand are still v weak, as he is only a wee babe

Has anyone been through anything similar? What sort of treatment were your children given, if any? I know in the grand scheme of things it isn't a huge problem, but I can't help but worry about how he will manage. I'm sure he will be fine, as he won;t know any different. We are waiting for an appointment with the paediatrician, and also the hand injury specialist to see what can be done.

As a teenager I knew a boy who had lost 3 fingers on his hand. He used his left hand for everything and was very dextrous (sp?) He was about to start driving lessons when we lost touch.

He was very capable and it was usually weeks after you met him that you suddenly noticed.

I have several male friends who have since lost fingers thru accidents and adventures. They manage fine in different ways. Its a matter of adapting but am no expert. If he has his thumb he should still be able to have some pincer movement you would hope.

Yes, they think amniotic banding was the cause.

I think you will find that he copes amazingly well. Especially since it will come along with his normal development rather than having lost them through an accident IYKWIM. I have a patient who only has a thumb and some little knubs on one hand. He is 5 and manages wonderfully.

My DD2 was born in January with her left arm amputated below the elbow. It was because of amniotic banding.

She is now 8 months and is crawling or sliding I should say. She uses her elbow to hold objects and her right hand to grab things with.

The hospital have been great. The hardest part is that first nasty response you get. I had one in Paris recently and I wanted to scoop her up and kill the boys who had made the remark.

I know it isn't big in the grand scheme as you say but still a whirlwind of emotions all the same.

My best friends dd1 was born with only one finger on her left hand and 3 fingers on her right, no big toe on her left foot and she had to have her right foot amputated at 3 months. She has to be without a doubt the happiest child I have ever met.
The problems were not cause by a syndrome it was just sheer bad luck if you want to look at it that way.

She attends a childrens hospital every couple of months to have her prostetic limb fitted and they have nearly rebuilt the hand with 3 fingers on it, when they have done that they will be starting to rebuild the hand with one finger on it. Although it can not be much fun for her she is a bright bubbly 2year old.

She already knows that she is different from other children and has addapted so she can do anything everyother 2 year old can do. She has such a huge personatily that at the moment it just doesn't seem to matter.

I'm sure if she ever has any troble from cruel children that she will just take her leg off and wack them with it!
