8 month old not hitting milestones , is something wrong?

Hi,

I have a 2 year old and an 8 month old, so have seen what is 'normal' with my 2 year old, and am a bit worried about my 8 (almost 9) month old.

He has a milk allergy and trouble swallowing milk, so doesn't drink enough; 10oz a day plus water and 3 meals, but that is for a different post! Just some background.

What I'm worried about is:

He doesn't babble, can make sounds, but mainly laughing, shrieking, giggling etc.

He can't sit up and doesn't want to. His mode of transport is rolling around the room so always wants to be on his back.

When should I get concerned or is this normal too?

Thanks!

Hi, my ten month old started babbling about two weeks ago, if that helps. Proper ba ba ba-ing now, in context too (eg boo, baby). Nothing before.

Also, I know a couple of babies who are 'late' sitters and crawlers so that also sounds fine to me. One is a year old and liked to lie down til very recently. Sounds like he has just figured out a way to roll around and is sticking with it!

PS my second is so far different to my first in most ways apart from being almost identical-lookong, so don't compare too much!

Thanks so much. That has made me feel a bit better. :)

By the way, at 10mo my DS was having less than 10oz milk per day: just one 6oz bottle in the morning and that was it.

He just loved his food and dropped his bottles of his own accord very quickly after I weaned him. He dropped all formula feeds althogether at 10.5mo. Wouldn't drink cows milk either. HV said it was rare but not unheard of.

He just decided he was a Big Boy and didn't want milk bottles any more. He wouldn't drink it out of any kind of cup either. Still won't. He is 18mo now and still thriving without drinking any milk.

I just give him vitamin drops and a diet cram packed full of dairy: he will have cows milk on cereal. Lots of cheese based dishes. Butter. At least one large portion of yoghurt a day.

He is fine.

Just wanted to reassure you that a 10mo drinking 'only' 10oz milk is not necessarily a problem :-)

Great. I'm a little concerned about dehydration though. Did your baby drink water? Mine can't drink out of a beaker or cup yet. He just spits it all out! So doubt he actually swallows more than about 2oz water a day..

Sounds normal apart from maybe the swallowing thing.Do you mean he can't drink even from a bottle? Have you had support with this as it must have been a problem before starting solids?

Babbling and sitting you're still in the range for, sitting is something like 5-10 months and babbling I don't know buy often starts later.

I would say that if you are concerned, you should talk to your GP about it. Both the swallowing and the not sitting up could be because of lower muscle tone, or other issues such as dyspraxia, hypermobility, etc. I don't want you to panic, but you are his mum and only an assessment from a professional will give you a 'accurate' picture.

Any other developmental concerns? Does he grab objects etc? From your post I don't think there is any cause for concern but there would be no harm getting him checked out to put your mind at rest.
