Potty training at night

My DD is 3yrs 7 mths and very bright. She has been potty trained during the day since she was 2 yrs old and has been wearing pull ups at night for the last 6 months in the run up to getting her to be dry at night. I put her to bed at 7-7:30 and lift her onto the toilet at 9-9:30 and she's awake at 6:15. However she is showing no signs of using the toilet herself in the night or being dry as her pull up is used at night. Any tips for how I can encourage her to be dry at night. She has an ensuite toilet which has a light in it all night so I don't think its a scared-of-the-dark thing?

I'm not sure if there is anything specific you can do; my understanding is that it's a maturity/hormonal thing, and it's a case of waiting for dry nappies in the morning.

Apparently lifting to do the toilet at night is not recommended as they don't learn they're needing the toilet - instead they learn to wee in their nappy at the same time each night.

There was a recent thread about late trainers, sorry I can't link as on phone.

If it's any consolation, my DS 5.5 is still in night nappies. Until I have a week or so of dry nappies, it will stay that way.

Try not to worry, 3.7 is fine & it will happen when she's ready.

I would like to reiterate all the cheese has said.

  1. Lifting not recommended as this trains the body to go at night which is the opposite to what you want.
  2. It's basically a waiting game til the body produces enough of the urine-inhibiting hormone required.
Be patient and don't worry!

OK thank you so much for your messages and reassurance. She had one dry nappy this week (woohoo!) but that was it.

I have felt terrible about waking her to lift her to wake her so maybe I'll stop that!

Well I didn't lift her last night and she had a bone dry nappy this morning again and she has asked not to wear the pull up tonight!

I'm going to let her sleep without one and see what happens. I can always put the pull up back on if it doesn't work.

Hi op, I have a thread on this board about my ds (now 7.6), he has now done exactly 2 weeks dry at night!

Nothing you can do really but lots of tips on my thread or eric website about avoiding blackcurrant and upping daytime drinks.

Your dd is very young still, good luck for tonight Smile

bellaandbumpsmum · 24/06/2014 14:03

Thank you for the encouragement Whereisegg. She's never drunk blackcurrant and is very good at drinking during the day, although her room gets real hot at night at the moment as it's on the sunny side of the house so I think she drinks a lot before she sleeps! We shall see, at least I know it's no biggie if it does't work out tonight though. x
