Toddler-proofing home for sibling rivalry!

My nearly 3 year old toddler has just started to take exception to his younger brother (15 months), probably because he's starting to walk and talk, steal his toys etc. Reading and trying to follow all the sibling rivalry advice. Have never toddler-proofed our home - childminder always said better for children to learn how to use the stairs, which both can. But that doesn't prevent one being pushed down the stairs by the other which happened a few weeks ago - had closed the bathroom door with little one in side while I ran him a bath, older one opens the door, lets little one out and pushes him down the stairs. Other than watching like a hawk, any other suggestions please? Do stairgates work for older ones (e.g. John Lewis website says that BabyDan no trip stairgate suitable up to 2 years old) i.e. are they robust enough to be pushed/challenged by strong-minded toddlers or could it potentially make it worse? Any other thoughts appreciated!
Thanks
