I'm mum to three young mixed( black African and white British)
My eldest is 4.5 years and goes to nursery.
Just recently she started talking about skin colour and saying things like. " that girl is the same colour as me" " my mummy is white and my daddy is black" etc
We haven't really ever discussed it at home so wondered where she was picking it up and if yours did the same at this age?
How did you respond?
We live in a diverse community in London but she does go to a school with a lot less diversity than others (mostly white, well off families)
In September however, we have got a. Place (6th choice ??) in a misty white roughish estate. (with lots of British flags ??)
I'm not happy about the school but that's another issue.
Just wondered what your experiences were?

Well I am mixed race. My 4 year old hasnt picked up the notion of colour yet - we don't refer to skin colour and he has friends of all hues which might be why he isn't fussed.

Just use the phrasing you would prefer when she mentions it and keep it factual.

Have you put yourself on the waiting list for other schools?

My son is mixed race and we discuss all races positively- never criticise or say anything negative.
