You can buy a machine or get an app on your phone. It kind of sounds like the noise from an extractor fan, it blocks out all other noise.

Thanks yellowsnow - is it considered safe and 'normal' to use? Is it just to get baby off to sleep?

Yep it's safe and quite commonly used. It blocks out other noise, and it also mimics womb noise (being in the womb is a noisy place!) so helps newborns relax.

My DS loved white noise to get to sleep when he was younger - from birth until about 5 months. I bought Ewen the Dream Sheep - godsend! It has four different sounds but all.have a heartbeat in the background and it glows a pinky red colour to mimic the womb.

He still loves it now at 8mo, but cuddles it and plays with his ear when falling asleep, as opposed to needing the noise.

Loads of babies like it and I've slept in a room with one and had a great sleep.
My baby would probably sleep with a bomb going off so never needed one, but would have got one if required.

I just tuned my radio so that it wasn't picking up a station. White noise worked a treat for us.

I'm an adult and use it occasionally because I have tinnitus. It works like a treat in sending me to sleep.

White Noise Lite for Android is fantastic BTW and it is free.

The sound of the hairdryer was the only thing that would get my first DC to sleep!

my ds has it to go to sleep at every sleep time apart from the night feed.

He now won't sleep without it so it's good but also has a backlash Grin
