2.5 year old twins constantly fighting... help!

I've got 2.5 year old twin boys. One is constantly hitting/pushing/biting the other. We have tried everything we can think of to stop it (time out/ignoring/praising good behaviour) but its just not working.
I'm feeling more like a referee than a mother!
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

How much time do they get alone? Do they go out one without the other? Is it possible to separate them more e.g. Take turns to go and stay with grandparents? They might get on better if they had time apart.

I have two close in age and they were much better with time apart- you might find the same if one goes out with DH and one stays with you-one goes to a friend - one stays with you etc.

My twins (boy/girl) fought a lot, well they still do, but they do get on better now, promise. At about that age we let them get on with it (unless it was getting way out of hand, obviously) and it did seem to help. We discussed with their nursery and they agreed to do the same and noticed an improvement. Whether it was an attention thing, I don't know, that seems to drive my two most of the time. But we didn't have any biting, so that may have changed our approach.

Time apart is fantastic. We have no family nearby so would tend to split up with one each. I try and do that as much as possible, they're together all the time, same class at school, so it is good for them. They're not dependent on each other as such, just very competitive with each other.

We do try and take them out separately but not as much as we intended. Might have to try and make it a regular thing. We have tried leaving them to it but one just won't fight back so it seems really unfair.
