2yo biting herself

DD has developed a habit recently of biting either me, or when I won't let her, the nearest object or, more often, she will bite her arm. Really hard. Sometimes it's frustration because I won't let her have what she wants (yesterday it was the kitchen knifes!), but sometimes she gets upset out of the blue and I don't know why. She has silent reflux so I'm always wondering if she's having an episode and she's biting in pain, but am never sure. I don't think it's teeth, as she's not constantly chewing on things.

Anything I can do to stop the biting? It's awful to watch and bloody painful when it's me.

I thought they grew out of the reflux when they started walking?
Teething molars?

That's what the doctors kept telling us too (along with 'when she starts solids', 'when you stop BF at night' and 'when she's 2') but in our case it turned out to be cobblers. DD is one of the 5% that didn't grow out of it by 12 months

Interesting about molars. I guess it could be. She's a late teether though, her canines have only just emerged.

My dd seems to be allergic to soya and at 23m still spits up when she has some and has been very sick when teething molars and canines.
I dont suppose that will go away for my dd until she outgrows the soya allergy.

What will they do about her silent relux?

She's on ranitidine, but I'm about to push for a referral as she's not under consultant care, despite meeting the (old?) NICE guidelines for referral. She doesn't spit up, it rarely gets that far just burns her throat/mouth.

I'm glad you've at least been able to identify the culprit in her diet. The reflux definitely gets worse with teething.

Have you tried giving her a special thing that she's allowed to bite? I read about this technique somewhere... some children have special cushions to hit, for example. Perhaps something she can wear so that she always has it with her?

She knows she's not supposed to bite so she will grab the nearest thing (my jumper, a toy, her arm etc) and bite that. It's hard seeing her so upset. I've just thought, it might be her glue ear too that is annoying her. Who knows. Hopefully this too shall pass.
