5 year old - manage to stop one bad habit and another one starts

My 5 year old is driving me mad. He always had his fingers in his mouth. With a lot of hard work of us constantly reminding him to take his fingers out, he finally stopped doing it. Next , he started picking the skin around his mouth (leading to impetigo). We managed to stop that, and now he is picking the skin on his nose and cheeks.

I really despair! How will it ever stop??

Years ago when I was a nanny in Canada, the eldest daughter was like this. First she sucked her thumb, then bit her nails etc. I'm afraid I don't have any memory of how we stopped it. However she turned out to be gifted and is now training to be a doctor!

she is a fidget ... she picks her finger nails as well. Neither me or my oh do anything. As nothing has worked so far I am hoping she may just grow out of it.... or perhaps not
