2nd dry night for ds 7.4. Is this it?!

Ds has had very few dry nights in his life, and even fewer of these have been in a row.

At 5 he had his HUGE (surgeon said biggest he'd seen) tonsils and adenoids removed due to sleep apnea.
Dr had mentioned that his brain was so concerned about keeping him breathing, it didn't care if he wee'd but that this would likely resolve itself after surgery.
It did, for 3 nights.

Fast forward a couple of years solid of brick-heavy pants every morning (and occasional wet beds too despite pants), we are on our second morning in a row of bone dry pants.

I don't want to be too outwardly excited at home in front of ds as he can't control it, so I want to be excited here please!

Could this be it, or just a lucky streak?

We got ds1 a private referral over a year ago and the consultant prescribed desmopressin (?) but they didn't work at all. I don't know if children can build up resistance but I do know that they don't make any difference for some.

hugebagsisanunderstatement · 03/05/2014 22:35

Yes I think it is common, we upped my dd's tabs to 2 a night on docs advise, for around 1 month then reduced back to 1 tab and are now trying to stop them altogether. Although not having much luck. Will persevere for now though, as would rather have mostly dry nites than all wet nights, the constant changing and washing beds drives me mad! Good luck

AllabouttheE · 04/05/2014 07:35

Hi egg
I'm not sure, the doc didn't seem bothered. I also felt that the brand of drug had an effect. Desmotabs aren't held in stock by any local chemists but one gave me desmopressin in a different brand. They didn't work at all, desmotabs did to an extent but not for long.

I'm back in pants

I order from amazon on subscription as I find it much cheaper

Whereisegg · 04/05/2014 08:16

Well that's interesting/worrying.
I had just thought that the medication would, well, work.

Slightly wet here again.

DS dry this morning. I had a sudden jump in the night when his alarm went off. It turned out that he hadn't quite shaken it dry enough when he went to the loo. Grin Sleepily suggested that he wipe dry with paper... So the run continues.

Are drugs a first port of call if you're referred? Seems a bit strange. Still, the idea of trying to morph one type of subconscious (unconscious, even?) behaviour into another is strange and challenging in itself. Apparently in children over 7, alarms have a 60% success rate. Wet stop's own figures, though.

I hope that we're not all having to make the most of this lovely drying day.

Lemonsole · 04/05/2014 09:50

Allabout - have you tried an alarm? My DS is a vvvvv heavy sleeper, and it seems to have worked for him. He's 7.6. His sister was also dry from 3, etc.

AllabouttheE · 04/05/2014 21:06

Hi lemon
Waiting on enuresis clinic referral as I think they provide an alarm. It's in ex husband family, his niece was 13 so I just try to go with the flow..... In a hopeful manner

Nice to have this thread tho

8 year old not dry really and we are under a very good private paed who said that a) it's inherited, DH wasn't dry till 9, b) lifting is totally fine, we lift and she's usually dry I'm the morning c) desmopressin doesn't always work, it doesn't for dd and that 10% of under 10's still wet. What's working for us at the moment and giving us 5/7 dry nights is, more fluid pre 6pm and taking her to the loo before we go to bed. She's started to wake up at about 6am needing a wee so I think that it's working, slowly. My other 2 were dry both day and night before 3 so it's a bit of a shock to the system for all of us.

Woo hoo, Egg: you're on a roll there.

We now have four in a row sans pull-up, and Wednesday night should (fingers, toes and everything else crossed) will mark two whole weeks of dryness Smile I'm daring now to believe that he might just have got it.

Our next nail-biting night will be the Beaver sleepover next weekend. He'll have been exactly one week out of night pants when it happens...

Whereisegg · 06/05/2014 16:21

I'll be thinking of your ds, he's doing so well!

Tbh, even the wet pants are a success to me as they're so light, I know it's nothing that he's consciously controlling but I'm so proud of him Smile

Lemonsole · 10/05/2014 09:05

Oh, Egg :-(
I hope your DS doesn't lose his optimism. It's so hard when it's beyond their control. We praise them when it's going well, but that makes it so hard for them when it doesn't, even though we're not cross and know that it's just one of those things.
They're still disappointed when they want so much to be dry.

The bin men took away our rubbish yesterday, including what was hopefully the last ever shipment of night pants / nappies. He's still ok; Beaver sleepover is tonight, and he's going to go for it commando and with no alarm. So I may have a soggy sleeping bag tomorrow, and I may not.

Maybe Wet Stop could help your DS. He's so near...

Whereisegg · 10/05/2014 14:24

Dry today Smile

Dry! and that's just me. He's too tired for emotions now. Grin Went for a wee in the night, but woke up for it in spite of a half-ten bedtime. So, so happy.

Whereisegg · 11/05/2014 16:11

I can't cartwheel as it may affect my ability to be dry at night but yaaaaaaaaaaaay Grin Grin Grin Grin
