Could DS be saying mummy at 8 months?

Or is he too young?
What he says isn't extremely clear but he says it a lot.

He says mmmmm-y like mummy but he can't say the um part, he says it whenever he's upset, and he did it non stop this morning in his cot until I went in.

My mum said "where's mummy" to him yesterday and he immediately moved himself around to look at the door (I wasn't there so maybe looking to see if I was there?)

Could he be saying it or am I being daft?

He could definitely be saying it. DS said it at about ten months, if that helps.

How do you know when they are using it in the right context? My DS says Dada and Mumum but I have no idea if he's referring to us ir just babbling!
Sounds like your DS is definitely talking about you OP.

I have a video of DS3 saying by bye at 6 months so it's perfectly possible. If anyone said byebye to him and waved he would wave and say "buhbuh" He, like both of his older brothers, have been early and copious talkers and now at 7 DS3 gives us a pretty much non-stop commentary on his life.

Dd started talking at seven months with simple words like dada, hello, look, bye. Babies often say the word "mummy" later on because the "mmm" sound is harder to say.

I think its likely that your baby understands what you are saying, but doesn't have the muscle control yet in the mouth to reply clearly. Some people advocate baby sign language for this tricky phase.

DD2 was definitely saying "more" at mealtimes by nine months. With meaning.

She also used to try singing along with Twinkle Twinkle - the bit where it says "up above the world so high." She would go: "ur bur bur bur wur sur" just at that bit / this was around the same time as she said "more." So proud.

My daughter said 'hi' perfectly clearly - crisp H and all - at one month. It was even in context, and surprised the hell out of the several witnesses who heard it. (So it wasn't just me imagining things. )
Of course, then she didn't say another word for months. But I think she was saying Mama by 8 or 9 months.

Ninja DS was the same! He said Hiya really clearly a few times between 3 weeks to 2 months old!
Then of course nothing til now!

He's really good at saying the "mmmm" sound! He does it when he's frustrated and upset.
His "mummy" sounds like "mmmmm-y"

Definitely My DD was saying mummy, daddy and flower clearly at 6 months. She was a very early talker and had an astonishing ability to repeat words straight back to you, and learn words very quickly.

At 8 months she said 'ladybird' (she was playing with a toy ladybird at the time) clear as a bell! So glad it was in front of my DH's whole family otherwise I swear no one would have believed me! We all sat there open-mouthed until his mum asked her if she could say it again, and she did.

She's 21 months now and her vocab is vast for her age.

Mine are both fast talkers. My DS said mama at 7 months .... I was shocked as it took DD a lot longer (maybe 13-14 months) and lots of practice as the mmmmm sound. At 10 months he has about 5 words so far. My DD is 21 months and her speech is very clear, you say a word and she repeats it. It's very handy to be honest as I know what she wants, no random pointing and 'uh uhhh' from her!

DD was about 5m for dada and maybe 6m for mama both to correct people. She has about 500 words now at 22m joining about 4 or 5 together.
(She made a hello noise several times at 10 weeks)

Yes, my DS was saying "cat" and "tickle" at about 8 months though every living being, including DH, was a "cat"

DD whose 8 months next week has started waving and saying hiya. I thought it was coincidence at first but she has done it a lot now. she makes a mummma noise when she's upset but I don't know if she knows what she's doing. No Dada yet much to DPs frustration

My baby said dada at six months but no mama yet. Says nana and make lots of funny sounds :)

By that age both mine were saying mama, Dada, look, up, no etc. Both speaking in sentences at 12 months so yes it's possible!

My daughter was another really early talker. She said mam/dog/duck/no/(which she said as "node") ess(for yes) paps (for papa) and a few others by 10 months. When she was about 14 months a friend of my nana's stopped to us in the street. She did the "coochy coo" type of nonsense chat and my daughter looked back round to me and said "Mam! she's stoopid! Ess!" It was as clear as a bell! I was mortified!!

Her younger brother was the opposite!! He was very slow to talk -and at 16 is still a man of few words!! He also was slow to walk but could have climbed for Ireland!!!

My 6 month old son babbles all the time but I am not sure if he associates the words yet. He does look up at me if I call his name, if he is not preoccupied on a new adventure. He is constantly looking for new things to put into his mouth. I would say that your baby is on their way and is def. trying. Congrats!

Yes. I had two really early talkers, dd2 said her sister's name at 5 months! DD1 could say Mama, Dada and duck at 6m, joined two words at 7m and was talking in sentences by 12m. We are a family of early talkers, I have read that it is an inherited trait to talk early or late. Very late talkers seem to go straight to paragraphs. Like Einstein.
