nearly 8 weeks and not smiling...worried

Hi - my baby boy will be 8 weeks old in 2 days and has yet to let out a proper smile (though sometimes he seems to look vaguely happy, without smiling as such). Nor does he coo. In fact, apart from crying, he doesn;t really make other sounds. He was born 4 weeks early and also has chronic wind, so he spends quite a lot of time in a bit of pain and discomfort.

Should I be worried about his lack of smiling and cooing? Any information, advice or reassurance greatfully recieved.

Don't worry. From what i can remember, when ds was 2 months old he didn't smile, or make much noise apart from crying. At about 3 -4 months he starting making noises ( didn't sound like coo at all though) but only when he was having his nappy changed (odd child!).

DTS2 did not smile until he was 20 weeks. Now at 2yo he is always beaming.

thank you both so much, I feel a lot calmer now. Maybe I should've said that he does make one loud noise apart from crying - he farts like a 30-year-old!

yep, ds's farts always make DH pull an extremely anxious face as he is convinced nothing could sound like that without there being > ''follow through' !
