19 month old language

DS is 19 months, and not saying Mummy or Daddy yet. He has around 15 words that are clear and relatively easy to understand, from the name of our dog to types of food to household objects. He gabbled away constantly in language that sounds like speech but isn't, and also has about another 20 "words" that are completely not the right word, often the noise that something makes or sometimes something random, but I understand what he's saying. (I don't mean brum-brum for car etc, although he says that, I mean a weird squeak noise for "bird", or an impression of the Hoover noise for "Hoover", or "psss-psss" for flower!).
Does that sound normal or not? All of my NCT group seemed to start with "mummy" and go from there. What should I be doing to encourage him to use the right word for things?

He sounds like he's doing great. My daughter's first word was cat, and she used it for all animals for a while! I can't remember when she started to say mummy but it defiantly wasn't first.
For the right words just repeat back to him so if he does the speak noise pointing at a bird, just say so ethane like 'oh yes a bird'.

Mine didn't say Mummy or Daddy (except as random sounds) until 22 months or so. It's normal for DC. They all speak fine now (age 6+).

That's great, thank you. Jelly that's exactly what I do at the moment, so hopefully I'm on the right track. He's a real little chatterbox, I just wish I knew what most of it meant!

If it's of any further consolation, DS (3.5) didn't start speaking more or less properly until just two months ago. And now it's fine. I was worried back when he was 19m too and we did see a SALT eventually but she confirmed all was fine. Just a bit slow to click into place.
