Is five just an awful age?

My five year old DS is driving us nuts.

We can't decide if him being an opinionated child with very little humility is just a phase or if it's a true personality thing.

He never, ever stops talking and is constantly blowing his own horn. It can be embarrassing when says things like "I'm good eh?" and "I have the best xxx". He just rides roughshod over peoples conversations - and it doesn't matter who he's talking to, he'll happily interrupt a total stranger talking to their child in the play park.

I am feel a little wobbly about the fact that I am just not getting it right with him today. As we are away for another two months I don't have any other children to "compare" him with or other mums to talk to.

What do you think?

My 5 yr old is like that too dejags.

He'll interupt 5 seconds after we've told him to stop interupting. I drives me insane.

Think it's an age thing. My DS is 5 and has been like this for a while now. Everything he has or is has to be the biggest, best etc. Drives me mad. But from listening to his friends, he is not alone.

Just loking forward to him growing out of it. But God knows what the next "stage" will bring!!!!

Totally my 5 yr old too, I am having a complete nightmare holiday with mine - and feel awful counting the days till he goes back to school. Spent most of yesterday crying about how crap I am with him. Really at end of tether.......so help here too pls.

Today he's been a total horror. Went to the Warner Movie World Theme park near Brisbane. Should have been a great day, but I left in tears as he was so obnoxious. He demanded, very vocally all day long, wouldn't listen and then was really horrible to me on the way out.

He's an absolute angel if he doesn't have any "competition" but put anybody or anything else in the mix and he just becomes a total motormouth.... arrghhh...

Trip otherwise is totally fab thanks, gutted that we only have another 2 months to go.

I read on another thread that you are 20 weeks already - can't believe how quickly that's gone. Do you know what sex the new baby will be?

My dd was 5 in May, and over the past couple of weeks has started trying to override conversations, and has also started to answer me and (particularly) dh back. She doesn't always have to be the best, but she always has to be right ... even when she's not. And suddenly, from being a very generous, sharing child, everything is "Mine!".

She's still lovely in a lot of ways, though, and I have my fingers firmly crossed that this is just a stage ...

Yes my nearly five year old (five in Oct) is like this. Lost count of the times I've told him not to interrupt. He's definitely hard work!

My ds who is just 5 knows everything and has excuses for everything.

I have my 20 scan next wek dejag...and we've decided to not find out!!

I'm going to gagg myself and wear a blindfold so that I can't ask or look..the temptation will be too much otherwise

It's incredible how tiring it can be to have a third person constantly interrupting conversations or contradicting you all day is.

I suppose we notice it more because we are always all together.

Lord LTH - you have far more self control than I do.

The curiosity would kill me.
