10 months old and not rolling..

Was anyone else's DC a very late roller?

DS is 10 month and has never rolled back to tummy. Ever.

Not crawling yet but moves around from sitting and has been sitting up unassisted for months.

I am starting to feel very worried and would love to hear if this was the case with anyone else, and what their experiences were.

Please don't worry. Mine NEVER rolled (well I think they each did it once by accident and never again). Lots of them never do, lots of them roll all over the place.

I wouldn't worry either- plenty of babies don't tend to roll, just as others never tend to crawl.

The fact your child is sitting unassisted is very good, I would only be concerned if that wasn't the case or if baby appeared to have weakness in limbs.

Mine only started rolling at 11 months, when he figured out that by doing that he can sit up by himself. He never even tried before - he hated being on his tummy and probably saw no point in rolling onto it! His physiotherapist was not concerned at all - as long as he meets other milestones - sitting, pulling himself up, etc, it is not a big deal.

Mine never rolled until well after he was crawling/ walking except a few times by accident. I was worried and HV told me rolling is not a milestone in the same way that crawling is not a milestone either as some babies never crawl but bum shuffle or go straight to walking.

DS is 4 years next month and nothing wrong with him.

Can't remember exactly when DD rolled but later than 10 months as she didn't move until 10.5 months and rolled after she moved. She's 8 now and moves fine.

Thank you so much for your reassurance. I spoke to my HV about it 3 months ago and she was very concerned and said it was a developmental delay and that it could be an early sign of a larger problem. She has since completely disappeared, which has only really added to my anxiety.

He looks to be making all the signs of getting ready to crawl and can pull up to his knees. He just really does not want to roll onto his tummy. Even when I guide him he forces himself back to lie on his back. He has always despised tummy time.

I hope it is not a sign of something more serious

daluze was that the reason why your son was seeing a physio? I am wondering if I should push to see one too?

I have had 3 babies. none of them ever rolled. Both my girls were crawling by 8 months and walking unassisted by 12m. ds1 is 7 months, had never rolled, hates tummy time, can sit unassisted and is presently doing his best to learn to crawl.

i really don't think it is a sign of anything except a smart baby who knows he doesn't like being on his tummy so sees no reason to roll about on to it.

My DS always hated tummy time too and was not keen on rolling. He ended up being an early walker. Does/did your DS have reflux? Xx

He was under observation by physiotherapist because he had some problems after birth and spent a week in intensive care. I don't think he really needed it, but did not refuse just in case I miss something. I think it was precautionary really.
I am surprised your HV was concerned about rolling, as I said, neither physiotherapist, nor neurodevelopmental pediatrician was never concerned about my DS not rolling (again, we only see pediatrician because it is a standard follow up for all babies who were in intensive care in our hospital).
If you are concerned you can talk to GP and ask for referral, but if it is only rolling, I would not worry. From what you describe, it seems he will be on the move soon!

EntWife that is interesting, so maybe it is not so uncommon if your three never rolled. I don't know anyone IRL who has a non-roller..

Elllimam he never had reflux but had serious food allergies that caused him a lot of tummy pain.. Maybe the two are linked, I had never thought to link the two.

daluze Thank you for sharing. I didn't want to pry. I was just curious if this was something I should be looking into. I am sorry to hear your baby was in intensive care, that must have been terrifying.

In my heart I have always wanted him to take his own path and not stress about milestones. But now I feel this is so much later than others. I was silly and googled and there were lots of links saying not rolling was an early sign of ASD which had me worried. I know that the sooner interventions are started, the better for baby. I just want to enjoy him and not worry. He is very lovely.

No problem. NICU was the worst experience in my life (even though you could not find better and more supportive staff), but my DS was a fighter and is absolutely fine now.
Google is not great, and esp if it gives yahoo answers, which are even worse - in my experience everything there can be a sign of ASD... But no expert will even try to assess a baby for ASD at this age, it is not possible.
Try not to worry about an individual milestone - I am sure every baby is "behind" in something and "ahead" in other things.
Has your DS had his 1 year check up yet? It maybe a good time to talk about your concerns with health professionals.

you made me google then with the non rolling being linked to autism as there were some concerns raised about my DS being autistic last year and his non rolling had never occured to me as a sign. But the non rolling is only a sign it seems if they are not interested in things you are showing them- which my DS was. (DS is hopefully fine now BTW)

My dd didn't roll and she bottom shuffled rather than crawling. By 10 months she was bottom shuffling, but still not rolling and we used to laugh that although she was technically "mobile" we could still immobilise her quite easily by lying her on her back. She still had the cot mattress on the highest setting as she never did anything but lie down when she was in her cot.

By the time she was 1, she had learnt to pull herself up to sitting and then standing in the cot, was rolling (both ways) whenever she wanted to, and was nearly walking.

So there is another no-worries no-rolling story for you :)

My dd leap frog bum shuffled all of a sudden around 10 months, cruised at 12 and walked at 14 months (confident within 2 weeks). She started rolling at the grand age of 17 months!!

She rolled once or twice before this by force (enforced tummy time which she hated) and temper (she stood and threw herself out of the cot just before her 1st birthday) so I figured she could and would do it when she wanted to!

Are they a sturdy child with a broad back, possibly tall?
The ones i know which rolled early (under 4m etc) were small, light babies.
The one that was over 6m was 90something percentile long baby and heavy.
Try putting on side and helping teach rolling.
TBH rolling is the devil they then try to escape napoy changes.

My oldest 2 DC (now aged 9 and 5 and perfectly on track) never really rolled. DC3 (10 months) has been rolling for at least 4 months, which has taken me by surprise and I almost think there's something wrong with her rather than the older ones....!! She goes onto tummy any chance she gets and even sleeps on her tummy (which I put down to really bad reflux)....

PS all my children have crawled (the youngest who is a roller very slightly earlier than the other 2 who didn't roll).
