need bunks but ds1 to young!

ds2 is almost climbing out of his cot (16 months - very tall) so we are thinking ahead to beds. BUT he shares a room with his brother who is 3 and already in a full size single bed. there is no room for another bed however small so we are going to have to get bunks even though top bunks are not suitable for under 6's!
there is no other option unless i put them both into the same bed (hmm, that'll be fun!) sooooo...are there any bunks that younger children can go in the top of? or have you got yours in bunks?

Ideally we wanted a bunk taht you can seperate for if we magically could afford a 3 bed house but saftety is my priority but need it to be as cheap as poss.

DS1 is quite sensible and i think that after a few nights of the initial excitmenet of a new bed that he wpuld be fine, not leaning over the side but obv you can never terll can you

Cot bed without sides on for ds2? Presumably if you have room for a cot then a small cot-bed, or toddler bed wouldn't take up that much more room. Persoanally I'd wait a year or two before your eldest went into the top bunk.

no room for cot bed, the cot is right upto an old gas heater that we are not allowed to take off the wall even though it doesn't work(we rent) already moved all the furniture that we can out of there into our room which also has no space. and our bed won;t fit into their room to swap the rooms round

dh bpught an ikea one that has railings all accross the top bunk so cant fall off iyswim. ds2 went into the bottome part of it at 18 months with a bed guard. and on the top one at agefourish i thnik. he just turned five and has been in the top bunk for a year now i think.
but ikea stuff is of course ten cnm longer than other beds

ds1 slept on a mattress for three months when we couldnt afford a bed . can a double mattress fit into their room?

no a double mattress won't fit nor will a camp bed next to DS1's bed. its a really tiny room and we had planned to move firstly b4 DS2 was born and then b4 he needed a bed buit bloody houseprices round here are ridiculous.

Does your cot have a drop down side?
DD2 is 2 and climbing out her cot.I now have the side down.It still high enough so she can't roll out but easier to climb out of.I can't afford a bed for her at the moment!

leave the side down, and put cushions aroudn so he doesnt hurt himself when he climbs out.

Thats a brilliant idea leaving the side down! will keep it up as long as poss but with a soft landing and when the day comes that he actually climbs out he won't have hurt himself too much and i will put the side down from then....oooh ty

No experience directly but my SIL has twins and they are been moving into bunk beds when they were 3yo without any problem.
There is a rail on the top bed to prevent falls and they are both very good at climbing. Are you worried that your ds1 is too young compare to the 'authorized' age or that he will fall because he is too young to cope with going in and out of the top bed?

Argos do a shorty bunk that isn't too high - we're getting one in the next couple of weeks for our 2 ds's - ds1 is 4 (but 5 in December) so a bit older, but I think he would have been OK in it from 3.

It says from 3 years old!!

If you're worried about DS2 - how about buying bunks with a trundle bed underneath? Then at night time, pull out the trundle bed as an extra safety feature on top of having baby protector sides to the cot. In the morning, simply slide the trundle bed back in, and you have maximum space again! Added bonus of having a spare bed for sleepovers as well!!!

P.S. My DDs will have to go into bunks once DD1 reaches 4 years old. I think if they're sensible, they'll cope!!

P.S. This is the one I'm thinking of getting and it says from 3!

that bunk sounds brilliant, thank you had never seen a bunk that didn;t say from 6 years b4 so was a bit worried as to why under 6's can't go in bunks.
shorty bunk not massivley expensive either. is it the length of a single bed but shorter in height?or short that that as well?

my worry is taht they will jump off the top bunk (mine deffo would despite promising they wont)

i don't think ds1 would jump but he may get over excited and lean a tad too far. if he jumps he will go right thru the floor to the kitchen beneath!!!

My DS went into the top bunk at the age of 4. Never had any problems. The children don't play in their bedroom though, so I think that has helped with no jumping.
I bought my beds in argos & they are detachable & they were cheap!

hi my 2 kids been in bunks for a year. ds on top bunk since just before 4th birthday and we've had no probs. we just explained to him that he wasn't to stand up or jump on the bed.

Just don't buy him Superman pyjamas!
