How far would you expect your 3 year old to be able to walk without having a rest?

I want to walk into the nearby village and DS1 is now far too heavy for tandem buggy - It is about 1.5 miles away and mostly downhill but the same on the way back and uphill - is it too much to ask? There isn't really anywhere for him to sit down - not even a proper pavement just a kind of footpath at the side of the road.

depends on the child

dd1 would have run there and back with no thought of a reast

dd2 would have to be cajoled and carried half the way

Agree depends on child and their mood. I usually take out single pram and make ds walk but if hes a little tired he can sit on front of pram between dds legs..usually gives him a couple of minutes to pep up again.

DD1 walks to playgroup and it takes me, on my own, about 20 mins. With dd1 walking and dd2 in the buggy about a week .

One big hill halfway so up and down there and back.

She whinges on the way back but I find that chatting constantly about anything and mentioning the icepops in the freezer at home helps no end.

agree, depends on the child. i walk everywhere as i don't drive, ds1 is happy to walk alongside the trolley(ds2 in trolley) and will walk as long as it takes (once walked none stop for about 3 hours - altho was in a zoo so was occupied)

if you can rest and reward when you get to the village and again when you get home, otherwise leave it if they aren't used to the distance.

Sometimes I pick up a stick and pretend she is a dog and throw it for her

It's tedious but it can get us quite a long way without moaning

Bit embarassing if passers by figure out what I'm doing

Ds wouldn't do it, no way. I would end up giving him a piggyback.

When I was a nanny all the children I looked after would have done it easily, because I always made them walk everywhere once they were 3

pmsl at the dog trick...I do have pretend races with ds and he is always delighted he beats me to the lamp post etc.

at imaginary ball! I am sure he will be fine on the way there I just wonder if we will ever get back!! I havent walked into the village for a while and the last time I did was with the tandem but I can barely push it with him now and he is over the 15kg weight limit anyway. Think we will give it a try - if the worst comes to the worst we can hop on the bus back at 2.30!

I think so nemo - walk down bus back is probably the best solution! We still have a little bit of a walk if we get the bus but not the uphill part! I am trying to get him more exercise but 1.5 miles is probably enough for little legs!

DS2 is just 4 and would still moan about this... and complain of achy 'bendy legs'..

sorry to hijack a little - but my dd is 3 in October and goe in puschchair just about everywhere mainly because i can't keep her ner me if she;s out- any tips as i really want her to start walking places now (and i know she would walk till she dropped!) I've tried wrist rein thing but she keeps saying to take it off and she doesn't want to hold hands as she sees walking as freedom! Any tips gratefully received!

dd is just 3 and would walk that, but would need a rest in the middle (i.e. in the village). But only if dh wasn't there - if I'm with the kids on my own they know they have to walk, but if dh is there they both clamour for shoulder rides.

We binned the stroller today (still have cumbersome three wheeler but only for times of major need- it's very unwieldy)

DS3 can walk pretty much all day, he has no ends to his energy. Indeed, his Cm lets him walk instead of the older kids.

He was 3 in July, the others all came out of the buggies by 3 as well, but that's more to dow ith us being a walk sort of family than anything else I think.
