2.9 yr old has started a sort of him while concentrating

Hi there

DS over the last few days has started making this little hmm noise while concentrating. It's very quiet, and is almost with every out breath a little like a meditative om! But it's a short little noise. When watching tv or reading stories, alone or with me/DH.

I've tried asking him what he's doing but not really got a response. Otherwise he speaks well and age appropriately. Just never notice any other kids doing this. Last night I noticed him doing it as he drifted off to sleep whereas he always used to sing to sleep.

Is this anything to worry about? Any one else's DC do this?

My son has done this. I think it's just a little habit/tic. It went after 4 or 5 weeks.

my ds has done this. it eventually went away after a month or so. I think my ds might have been a bit anxious when he was doing it.

my DS hums all the time, he's nearly 4 and he's more or less done it from birth. Sometimes now i don't even notice it.

Thanks for the replies. It's good to knownothersnhave grown out of it. If its anxiety related I guess it could be to do with impending birth of baby brother. Fingers crossed it sorts itself out, it's actually quite annoying!

DD1 did something similar when she was younger, although she grew up doing it rather than it just starting iyswim. She grew out of it. I'd ignore it and assume it will pass.

I used to do this when a child and it drove my parents potty! It was definitely a self soothing thing. Ds1 (9) does it now which is how i can sympathise with my poor parents :) He's done it for years, it started when he stopped having a dummy at age 3 but if we ask him/ distract him he stops doing it. It only happens with us at home so think it's just a comfort thing, like sacking his thumb would be if he did that!

Dd did this from about a year to nearly 3. Her's was a loud humm though which got louder with background noise (as if to drown out the background). Her preschool keyworker told me that they gently said her name when she started doing it and I think this has helped her phase it out. I miss 'the noise'.
