Separation anxiety, any coping suggestions?

My 1 year old has just started to be clingy. It started at bedtime on Sunday night, with him crying when I left the room and has happened last night too and at nursery yesterday and today. Have just been to have him weighed and he started crying as I lowered him onto the scales. This is very out of character for him, he's usually a very smiley chilled out little chap. HV said should put him in cot at night and leave him to it, so he knows who is the boss . I don't want to do that, but I can't bear the thought of broken nights again.

He doesn't seem to be teething and I can't think of anything traumatic that's happened recently (other than I had to spend a night away from home last Weds, but I put him to bed before I left and his dad got him up in the morning, which was probably more traumatic for dh than ds!).

Any suggestions to ease this period would be gratefully received. TIA

isn't 12 months about the average age for separation anxiety? I cant remember for sure but I think it might be.
I think what I did when it happened with my two was to be extra tactile but also fairly firm and stick with the normal routine/agenda as much as possible.
Do you get the Pampers monthly e mails about child development? I've found them quite useful this time round (DD is 17 months old). I'll try and get the link if you like.
