question for mums of 5 month olds

DD used to be quite vocal eg oohs and ahhs etc when she was around 2 months but apart from crying/whinging she no longer speaks iyswim and hasnt done for some time now. I dont expect words obviously but she was far better a long time ago and is pretty much silent now.
DH and dm have noticed this and mentioned it to me on different occasions. i hadnt said anything as I thought it was just me worrying over nothing.

How much does your five month old speak and what noises do they make?
Am I worrying over nothing?
I dont like my hv and feel that the gp would think me barmy. So am I barmy?

Herc, my ds is just about 6 months and very vocal, very noisy.

And dd at that age was very quiet, didnt do the goo goo gaa gaa thing at all. I found she was taking everything in and always seemed to be concentrating on toys etc. She now is still quiet but not in a 'shes got a problem ' way, just a quiet little girl kinda of way.Although she does have her moments.

Im sure your Ds is fine, just learning something new like an interest in stuff around her, but if you really are concerned then see your doc, if only to put your mind at rest.

my 6 1/2 month old has always been quiet vocal from an early stage and now has just started saying dadda and hiya bless her, but my cousin had her baby 2 weeks befor me doesn't even ooh or arh. I it just shows you that each baby is different and do things in there own time. Give your littlen a chance as cp3 says she may just be taking things in. I to dont like my hv and if i feel it nessersary to put my mind at ease i do go and see the gp I'd rather be safe than sorry! hope every thing goes ok for you let us know how things develop X.

hercules I was really really worried about dd because she was silent. She's 7 months now and does make more noises now, but up till 5 months or so was literally silent. I spoke to the HV who said that the thing to check was hearing - did your dd have the newborn hearing test? If that was fine, then there would be no congenital problem, but it could be something like glue ear. In dd's case, a bit of 'one to one' talking got her going - lots of eye contact and talking with your face really close. There's a thread somewhere that I started - I'll just have a look and see if I can find it.

can't find it I'm afraid. If you're worried then take her to the HV, especially if you think she can't hear. Hope everything works out!

Thanks for replies. i've been searching on this age and she should be cooing and allsorts by now and yet she i eeirily silent despite having cooed at i think 2-3 months.
Her hearing at birth was fine with the test and she seems to hear now okay.
We talk to her all the time and ds is 8 and constantly talks to her also. She laughs at ds although not us.
God, doing that searching has worried me even more now. I will phone GP tomorrow but if he says fine blah, blah I'll still worry as I've had bad experiences with ds and doctors before eg told ds had a nut allergy- not, and when we took ds to see about his arm that was hurting him the GP said he was recovering from the last stages of chicken pox. I felt so guilty that I hadnt even noticed he'd had cp as working lots, it turned out they were just starting!

I'm more interested in what mumsnetters say about their experiences.

hercules injoy the peace while you can mines 6 month and he was the same as you dd now he ignores us to growl at the cuetain dont panic at the moment she will do it when shes ready

We've got an almost 6 months old and although he does 'chatter' is certainly isn't the goo-goo's and gah-gah's that every book says they should do.
He's a screamer (and a loud one too) and has just learnt to blow a raspberry.
DS2 was much like your little one at 5-6 months and would happily sit in his pram or bouncy chair for hours on end just watching the world go by. He wouldn't sit still for a second now.

I'm sure your little one is fine.

Ds2 (now 13mths) didn't really make any cooing noises at all at 5 months. He was far too busy concentrating on the physical side of things. He was probably nearer 7 months old and even then he went through little phases of staying almost silent. Ds1 is autistic and didn't babble at all until he was 3yrs old so I've been keeping a close eye on ds2's speech development!

hercules, I'm afraid I'm not going to join the "I'm sure he is fine" camp. Of course all children are different, and so what other people's 5 month olds are doing isn't really relevant here. But a couple of things concern me about your post - the main one is that YOU are worried. Mothers who instinctively feel that things are not completely right with their children are usually correct - and the fact that you, your dh, and your dm have noticed this is significant I think. Secondly, you've noticed a difference between her now, and when she was younger. If you went to your GP, he/she would NOT think you were barmy, he/she would pay great attention to this change, and your instinctive feeling that there is something wrong, and give your DD a full work-up. I'd make an appointment if I were you. (And I'd start with the GP, not the HV).
I'm not scaremongering - I'm saying if your instincts are telling you that something may not be right, then go with them.

Jenny is 6½mths now, and was very 'chatty' early on, but went very quiet for a while, but in the last 2 or 3 weeks she has 'talked' and shouted almost constantly. There are times when I could swear she's saying hiya.

My little one is 5 months just. She is a noisy raspberry blowing, screaming little madam. Much to everyones entertainment. She makes all sorts of noises but not the ones that the books say. Not sure that I have much time for all these development books they make me paranoid. Her cousin who is not far behind makes very little noise at all. They are all different, and develop at different paces. I am sure in 12 months time you will wish for peace and quiet!!!!

Forgot about the raspberry blowing, Jenny did one at nursery a couple of weeks ago. Nothing unusual there, except she was eating lunch at the time. Jenny and the nursery nurse ended up with lunch all down their clothes.
