I don't know what has gotten into my child.

My 6yo has been misbehaving a lot recently. He is normally so well behaved I don't know what has gotten into him, he is now telling me no and not listening to anything I say or doing what he is told. I'm very confused at the moment and don't know how to fix it? This behaviour is happening at school also, I need to get my child back to the well behaved and well mannered child he used to be.

I really feel for you, my 5 year old went through this a few months ago. He is usually well behaved, but we went through a period where he literally turned into a different child. I decided to revert back to my old methods and made a new behaviour chart and started time outs again - it worked really well.

Sorry, I forgot to say, that before I implemented the behaviour chart I sat down with my son and made sure there was nothing contributing to the change in his behaviour, such as bullying, difficulty with school work etc. If it is the case that something had affected his behaviour then I would deal with it slightly differently.

Has your son suggested anything is upsetting him?

6yo is the worst age ime (sorry to say, but good news, really, only one way to go)

What kind of things is he saying 'no' to?

He is literally saying no to everything, it was a struggle to get him home from school this afternoon (wouldn't get in the car) had to shout at him which I think scared him a little as I never raise my voice. He also played up on a school trip to the park. He has told me he wants to live with his dad (out of the question)

Perhaps you need to speak to his Dad and get him to understand that it won't be happening. This is probably what's causing his oppositional behaviour.
