(Almost) 6 year old who won'y play alone............

......... argh! It has been one of those days when bedtime hasn't come soon enough! My #1 son is almost 6 & seems to need constant attention - the only things he'll do alone for more than a few minuites is listen to story CDs or watch TV. Today he has been a nightmare to keep occupied, whilst #2 son has been quote happy entertaining himself.

I know this is 1st child syndrome .... any ideas?? What about good ideas for birthday presents to get him into playing alone for a few moments a day???!!

DS1 is 5.5 and has the identicle problem but he is deaf so doesn't concentrate on the telly either. His younger brother and sister are much better at occupying themselves.
Ideas? Well DS likes a real job to do so washing up, making sandwiches watering the garden can occupy him temporaly (Sp?), sometimes geomag works, on holiday writing in an exercise book about what he had done kept him more amused than most things do.
