How far can your two year old walk?

My DS is coming up to 2 and will walk the short walk to the shops etc but he still comes with us to walk the dog in the buggy - although I always get him out for part of the walk.

If you are a dog walker how old were your DC before you could take them out to walk without the buggy?

Last weekend we were visiting friends and went for a walk but after a while he didn't want to go in the buggy but he didn't want to walk either so I ended up carrying him.

I can't wait to get rid of the buggy tbh.

We don't have a dog but our 2 and half year old easily does 5 miles daily and can do more on days we are actually walking/ hiking if he can rest in between.

Ie normal day he will walk 1.5 miles to work with us. Dh might take him into Hyde park for a 2 hours (2-3 miles walking around plus running in areas), then 1.5 miles back home. Plus any day to day stuff like walking to and from shops etc

He hasn't used a pram since 18 months though. Although still naps but indoors/ at home/ on any sofa/ on picnic rug

We have dogs, DD easily does a mile/mile and a half but that's over easy ground. Over rough terrain it's more like half a mile then she needs to go in the backpack.

The main problem with ditching the buggy completely is having to go everywhere at a snail's toddler's pace. It takes aaaages to get anywhere and you can guarantee you'll end up humphing said toddler around.

Yes, fishybits, I think a backpack might be the way to go - especially as we've just moved and the park is now about 400m away instead of 40!

My dd (18 months) runs around the house like a loon and will go about 100m at the park till she stops and starts on 'mummy up'. Buggy certainly not being given up on yet!

When mine started doing "mummy up" I would pick him up but stand still. If he wanted to move then he would have to walk. I'd gladly hold him, but not walk while holding him. He soon got the message and is a brilliant walker (now 3.5) and has been since about 2.

Sid77 that is a fabulous idea! A bit like stopping when a dog pulls on the lead; I will definitely try that.

Yes we did the same. Both ds's now understand that if the genuinely are tired we will carry, but after 15 min walk they aren't tired and have to simply walk.

Ds was terrible at that age. when he said "Mummy up" i'd say he could either walk or go in the buggy. We finally ditched the buggy about 6-9 months ago (he's now 3.3) and can walk quite a distance if he chooses to. The main problem is that he's lazy - will run around all day in a park, but gets bored walking from a to b.

Oh and I fully admit to bribery. Ie if we walk down here we can stop by the swings. If we walk back with the dog we will have enough time to climb the tree at the end/ read x book when home/ bake...

Usually something we were going to do anyway but they don't know that!

Dd 2.5 can also walk a good 2/3 miles over easy terrain and has done for the past year or so. She's tall for her age if that makes any difference, so she has little choice in walking lots of bribing involved.

YY on taking ages to get anywhere. There's usually something that distracts her from walking in the direction she's meant to be going in.
